Vegan Diet | Healthy vs. Unhealthy Ideas

There are many misconceptions when it comes to being on a vegan diet. Many people link being vegan with being absolutely healthy or eating like a rabbit. This is untrue. When you begin to do a little research and look at different vegan blogs and recipes you can start to see that being on a vegan diet is not necessarily healthy all the time. Here at Fresh N Lean’s healthy meal doorstep delivery service we have made it our mission to really focus on the quality and ingredients in all our meals.

To give you an example of a healthy vegan recipe vs. an unhealthy vegan recipe I randomly selected a dish to list the ingredients for you.

Black-Eyed Pea & Spinach Cakes these are the ingredients they listed:

– Fresh baby spinach

– Box firm silken tofu

– Fresh parsley

– Red bell pepper

– Scallions

– Black-eyed peas

– All-purpose flour

– Panko bread crumbs

– Baking powder

– Smoked paprika

– Thyme leaves

– Garlic powder

– Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

– Canola oil

At first glance this recipe seems great and healthy but once you really take a look at it there are a few things that you could stay clear of. For example:

– Tofu

– Baking powder

– All-purpose flour

– Garlic powder

– Panko Bread Crumbs

– Canola oil

It is very easy to take these 6 ingredients and either substitute them for some that are a lot better for you or simply cook without them. Here is what we would do at Fresh N Lean:

Tofu – I would go without it

Baking powder – go without it

All-purpose flour – substitute it quinoa flour

Garlic Powder – buy fresh garlic and crush it your self

Panko Bread Crumbs – if you are not worried about being Gluten Free substitute this with sprouted bread.

Canola oil – substitute it with safflower oil

The new and improved Fresh N Lean recipe for Black-Eyed Pea & Spinach Cakes looks like this:

– Fresh organic baby spinach

– Fresh organic parsley

– Organic bell pepper

– Organic scallions

– Organic black-eyed peas

– Quinoa Flour

– Sprouted Bread (optional if you want gluten free)

– Paprika

– Thyme

– Fresh Garlic

– Sea Salt

– Black pepper

– Safflower Oil

In conclusion I think it is safe to say that not all stereotypes are true. Think twice before buying that vegan cupcake at Whole Foods, just because its vegan doesn’t mean it is good for you.
