A new study conducted in Spain published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, found that organic tomatoes have higher levels of antioxidants than conventionally grown tomatoes. The study’s findings corroborate evidence that organic produce is overall better for our health than so-called “conventionally grown” produce. Pesticide residue on produce has long been vilified as one of the greater dangers of non-organic produce, but this study suggests that organic such as a fresh diet has an even better nutrition profile than conventionally-grown produce. Polyphenols, antioxidants found in tomatoes and other plants, are associated with reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, and other diseases. Tomatoes also contain beneficial lycopene, other carotenoids, and vitamin C.
